Steven Lieberman Authors Opinion Piece on Pro Bono Case Involving Burial Ground of Formerly Enslaved Africans for The Sentinel
For the Montgomery County Sentinel, partner Steven Lieberman authored an article titled "Hundreds of Bodies Buried Under a Parking Lot: Just Business as Usual for The Housing Opportunities Commission" on May 11, 2022.
The article discusses the pro bono case Steven and colleagues Jenny Colgate, D. Lawson Allen, and Kristen Logan are handling on behalf of the Bethesda African Cemetery Coalition (BACC), the pastor of Macedonia Baptist Church in Bethesda, and members of the Black community in Bethesda to prevent the sale of a burial ground for former slaves and their descendants. The Montgomery County Housing Opportunities Commission, the current owner of the land, seeks to sell the land to a developer. In October 2021, Steven and his team were successful in getting Judge Karla Smith to grant a Motion for a Preliminary Injunction, thereby halting the sale of the property unless and until the HOC complies with Maryland state law. However, the HOC is attempting to undo the ruling.
